October has been declared Cybersecurity Awareness Month 2022 by the President of the United States and Congress. Since 2004, the initiative has been in place to help individuals protect themselves online as threats to technology and confidential data become more commonplace.
The National Cybersecurity Alliance (NCA) and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) have this year led a collaborative effort between government and industry to raise cybersecurity awareness around the globe in October 2022.
Cybersecurity Awareness Month 2022 Theme
According to the official Cybersecurity Awareness Month 2022 government website, this year’s theme will focus on how you “See Yourself in Cyber”. The purpose of focusing on “you” this year is to demonstrate that while cybersecurity may seem complex, it is ultimately all about the people who interact with it.
This year’s awareness month will focus on the “people” element and how humans can better understand cybersecurity. Information and resources will be provided to help educate CISA partners and members of the public and ensure all individuals, organisations, and businesses make smarter decisions whether at home, school, or work.
Organisers of the event are encouraging people to engage in this year’s efforts by creating their own cyber awareness campaigns and sharing the cybersecurity awareness month message with friends, family and peers.
Here is what you can do to help promote Cybersecurity Awareness Month 2022. Throughout October, CISA and NCA will highlight key action steps that everyone should take:
- Use Strong Passwords
- Enable Multi-Factor Authentication
- Recognise and Report Phishing
- Update Your Software
See yourself in cybersecurity
The focus on “you” at Cybersecurity Awareness Month 2022 is to help draw attention to the role you play. People need to take basic steps to protect their information and privacy online. Vendors and suppliers must take ownership of their role while protecting their reputation, brand and business by putting strong cybersecurity measures in place to help prevent an incident at your location or further down the supply chain. Critical infrastructure owners and operators are part of a larger network of functions and systems that rely on or support critical infrastructure.
Organisations must also be aware of their place in a cybersecurity ecosystem and learn about what cybersecurity measures they can take to protect everyone within it. There is also a need for skilled workers with technical skills to meet the cyber challenges of today and in the future, so there should be a strong emphasis on educating people about cybersecurity and how they themselves can get involved and become more educated.
